The Aurete biodynamic agriculture winery was born in 2016 from a common passion of three friends Paolo, x,y. We all love natural artisan wine and we all have the desire to bring to light the area of Esperia (from the Greek "Hesperos" ).
This area between sea and mountains has a great location for growing vigards. Wine has always been cultivated here, the millenary tradition started in pre-Roman times and has continued to the present day. Esperia is located in Lazio region a few kilometres away from the Gaeta's gulf, in the Aurunci's Mountains Natural Park . This area which is part of Ager Cecubis "Formianum" (where many variety of wine were produced in ancient Rome) has also illustrious admirers such us Cicero who bought here a variety of wine during his journey from Arpino to the villa of Formia and the poet Horace who defined its vineyards as "tonic vineyards". The orogeny of the area is the result of tectonic movements that led to the raising of rocky layers dating back to the Cretaceous, proofed by the recent discovery of the footprints of Sauropods and Theropods in the vicinity of our vineyards.
This area is also famous among hikers and speleologists for Karst formations. In fact we can observe the presence of caves, sinkholes and hypogea formations. The karst erosion process has led to the formation of "Monticelli" the downstream hill of red clay rich in minerals (iron and magnesium) from which derives the name of the hamlet in which our vineyards are located . The flourishing biodiversity, the sea breeze coming from Minturno and the particular orography (that recreates a sort of natural amphitheater) help to create perfect pedoclimatic conditions for viticulture.
Our winery is build on 4 hectares of vineyards: "Aurete " vineyards 1,5 hectares with Syrah and two native vines Reale and Raspato, "Via Romana" vineyard with Reale and Syrah vines and “Cariano” centennial pre-phylloxera ungrafted vineyards dated back to 1840.
An added value of our ground is the presence of numerous native vines (19 have been identified) including the red Raspato and the white Reale which we have been able to recover with the help of the expert Marco Moroni. In March 2021 both native vines were registered in the Arsial (national register of Native vines).
During the first two years we have been working on the enrichment of clayey soils which is also rich of minerals (iron and magnesium). Biodynamic agronomic techniques were applied with the direction of Michele Lorenzetti. Preparations for the soil were made by Carlo Noro.
After many years of microvinification we finally succeeded with our first production in 2020 of three wines: the Syrah “Sauro” aged in Clayver, the red Raspato “Raptor” and the white Reale “Thero” aged in Artenova amphora.
